Benefits and Indications
The Dusa Blu Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator is used to treat:
Actinic keratosis: Precancerous lesions that often appear on the face and scalp due to sun exposure. The cure rate can reach 90% after two treatments.
Acne (Acne Vulgaris): This therapy kills the acne-causing bacteria (P. acnes), reduces inflammation, and shrinks the sebaceous glands (oil glands). This therapy is effective for acne that has not responded to other treatments.
Skin Rejuvenation: Improves overall skin texture and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and acne scars.
Rosacea and sebaceous hyperplasia: Blue light therapy can also help treat these conditions.
Treatment Procedure
While each clinic may have slightly different protocols, the general procedure includes the following steps:
Consultation: The doctor will assess the patient’s skin condition to determine if blue light PDT therapy is the right choice.
Skin Preparation: The area to be treated is cleansed of dirt and makeup.
Photosensitizer application: Levulan cream is applied to the targeted area and left on for 30–60 minutes or longer to allow it to be absorbed by the damaged cells.
Irradiation: The patient sits in front of a BLU-U device that emits blue light for approximately 16 minutes. The patient will wear protective eyewear during this session.
Post-procedure care: Moisturizer and sunscreen are applied. Patients are advised to avoid direct sun exposure for 48 hours due to skin sensitivity.
